For the first time, a self-portrait by Vincent van Gogh will be on exhibit in Wales. In March 2024, the National Museum Cardiff will host an exhibition of the Dutch master’s 1887 Portrait of the Artist.

A new exhibition called Art of the Selfie, which investigates if the self-portrait is the first selfie, will feature Van Gogh on display. The piece, which is typically kept at the Paris-based Musee d’Orsay, will be on view until January 2025.

One of the most famous faces in Western art is that of the impressionist, who painted 35 self-portraits before passing away at the age of 37.

As part of a mutual lending arrangement, it is traveling across the Channel alongside Renoir’s La Parisienne, popularly known as The Blue Lady, from Museum Wales.

It was deemed an appropriate way to round out the Year of Wales in France and to forge new commercial, cultural, and sporting links between the two nations by Deputy Culture and Sport Minister, Dawn Bowden.

A selection of artwork from the National Collection of Wales, which includes works by Rembrandt, Brenda Chamberlain, Francis Bacon, Bedwyr Williams, and Anya Paintsil, will be added to the Van Gogh.

The head of collections and research at the Cardiff Museum, Dr. Kath Davies, stated that visitors will appreciate seeing Welsh items next to pieces by one of the most well-known painters in the world.
