Resident Doctors in Ondo Begin Indefinite Strike
By Segun Adeyanju
Resident doctors at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH), Ondo, have commenced an indefinite strike, citing poor working conditions and unresolved grievances.
The doctors, under the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), are protesting issues including alleged illegal salary deductions, excessive taxation, non-payment of hazard allowances, and inadequate infrastructure.
President of UNIMEDTH ARD, Dr. Olaogbe Kehinde, highlighted the overwhelming workload due to a dwindling workforce, as many doctors have resigned or left without notice.
He stated that repeated calls for improved working conditions and fair salary adjustments were ignored, forcing the doctors to strike.
“This decision was difficult, but it became necessary as our well-being and patient care are being severely compromised,” Kehinde said.
He called on the state government to address salary irregularities, implement the new minimum wage, and ensure parity with other tertiary hospitals.
Former ARD President, Dr. John Matthew, decried significant salary disparities compared to other states, alongside excessive taxes and deductions.
“Doctors are leaving for better welfare packages elsewhere. The system here is deteriorating,” he lamented, adding that poor infrastructure, including power outages, further worsens the situation.
UNIMEDTH Chief Medical Director, Dr. Gbala Michael, appealed for more time to resolve the grievances, urging the striking doctors to reconsider their stance.
The doctors expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to patients but vowed to maintain the strike until their demands are met.
