Nigerian Farmer Defies Limits with Soilless Agriculture

By Segun Adeyanju

Samson Ogbole is revolutionising farming in Nigeria by growing crops in the air, offering a bold solution to land shortages in a nation struggling with food production.

With only 30 million hectares of farmland cultivated annually—far below the estimated 78.5 million hectares needed—Ogbole has turned to aeroponics, an advanced agricultural technique that eliminates the need for soil.

His journey into soilless farming began in 2014, and by 2016, he co-founded PS Nutraceuticals, a company dedicated to integrating technology into agriculture.

The method allows crops to grow year-round, reduces exposure to soil-borne diseases, and promotes urban farming by enabling cultivation within cities.

Ogbole, who has worked with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, believes Nigeria must embrace innovation to achieve food security.

He hopes to inspire young people to see agriculture as a viable and profitable venture.

With an impressive academic background spanning biochemistry, biotechnology, and agroecology, Ogbole continues to push boundaries, proving that technology-driven farming is the future of food production in Nigeria.
