Meet Abayomi Whint: Nigerian Woman Appointed As Judge In The United States

Nigerian-born Abayomi Whint has been sworn in as a judge for the Kings County New York Civil Court, as revealed in a video shared on her Instagram page on January 23, 2025, with the caption “Welcome to the bench, Your Honor!”

Whint was one of eight candidates elected to judicial positions in Brooklyn during the November 2024 elections.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at Brooklyn Law School, where she took her oath of office surrounded by family and friends dressed in white and green.

During the ceremony, she pledged “to discharge the duties of the office of judge for the Kings County New York Civil Court, according to the best of my ability. So help me God.”

With over 20 years of legal experience primarily in the public sector, Whint is an accomplished litigator, certified mediator, and arbitrator specializing in conflict resolution.

She has also been involved in organizational leadership, promoting cultures of belonging, team building, and implementing restorative practices as a Restorative Circle Keeper.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Whint “views justice not merely as a concept but as an active commitment to fairness, equity, and truth in every decision.”
