Mark Carney Is New Canadian Prime Minister
Former Canadian central bank governor Mark Carney has been elected as the country’s new prime minister.
Carney won 85.9% of votes cast in the Liberal Party leadership election on Sunday, March 9, 2025, to replace Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation from power in January after nine years in office.
The newly elected prime minister will take power in the coming days and is expected to organize the country’s next general election, which must hold on or before October 20, 2025.
Carney, who was previously the head of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England, has immediately set his sights on addressing Canadian relations with the United States.
America’s relationship with Canada has soured since Trump’s imposition of tariffs on the country over the influx of illegal immigrants into the US.

Carney said that Trump is “attacking Canadian workers, families, and businesses. We can’t let him succeed.”
He also noted that his administration will maintain tariffs imposed against the US by Trudeau.
“My government will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect,” Carney said.
“America is not Canada and Canada never ever will be part of America in any way, shape, or form.”
During his farewell speech, Trudeau opined that Canada is facing an “existential challenge” from the United States.
He also noted that Canada was facing a “nation-defining moment.”
“Democracy is not a given, freedom is not a given, and even Canada is not a given.”
