Hidden Picasso Portrait of a Mystery Woman Uncovered
Art historians at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London have uncovered a long-lost portrait hidden beneath Pablo Picasso’s 1901 painting ‘Portrait of Mateu Fernández de Soto’. Using infrared and X-ray imaging, they revealed the face of an unidentified woman, concealed for over a century.
Then, just 19 years old, Picasso painted over the woman’s portrait as he developed his signature ‘Blue Period’ style. Experts believe he reworked the canvas multiple times due to financial constraints and his creative process of transforming one image into another.
Though the woman’s identity remains unknown, she resembles other female figures Picasso painted in Paris during that time. Some of her features, like her eye, ear, and hairstyle, subtly show through the final painting. The discovery offers fresh insight into Picasso’s artistic evolution and has been showcased at the Courtauld Gallery in London since February 14, 2025. The exhibition would close on May 26.
