Kenyan Student Turns Pineapple Waste into Eco-Friendly Pots
By Segun Adeyanju
A Kenyan student, Maxwell Oyoo, is gaining national attention for transforming pineapple peels into biodegradable plant pots, an innovation that could redefine agricultural waste management and promote environmental sustainability.
Oyoo, a student at the University of Kabianga, showcased his invention at the 5th National Agribusiness Summit held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), in Nairobi on October 22, 2025.
His eco pots, made from processed pineapple waste, aim to reduce plastic use in nurseries and farms while supporting Kenya’s green economy.
“I wanted to find value in what most people throw away,” Oyoo said. “These eco pots decompose naturally, enrich the soil, and eliminate the need for plastic containers.”
Experts at the summit praised the innovation as a practical response to Kenya’s waste management and climate challenges.
Organisers noted that such youth-led initiatives align with the country’s broader goals of sustainable agriculture and circular economy development.
Oyoo’s project has already attracted interest from agribusiness investors and environmental agencies seeking scalable green solutions for farm-based waste recycling.
