Kemi Badenoch: I Will Earn Voter Trust and Release Thoughtful Policies

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has pledged to earn the trust of British voters by presenting well-considered policies at the right time.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Badenoch emphasized that her approach to leadership involves careful planning and communication. The interview, set to air on Monday, touched on concerns regarding her policy positions and the need for voters to hear more from her.

In a preview clip released by the BBC, Badenoch stated:
“We are six weeks into a four-year general election, maybe five even, depending on how it works. Whatever I say now is likely not to apply then. So I’m going to earn the trust of the British people by explaining to them how we think, and we are going to bring the policy out as it’s thought through.”

The Conservative leader added, “‘Watch this space’ is what I’m saying; you will see there will be a narrative.”

Badenoch assumed leadership of the party in November after defeating Robert Jenrick to succeed Rishi Sunak. In her victory speech, the MP for North West Essex acknowledged the need for the party to be “honest” about its past mistakes in government.

On Sunday, Shadow Housing Secretary Kevin Hollinrake defended Badenoch’s leadership, saying voters will “grow to respect her” as they understand her vision.

Appearing on Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips on Sky News, Hollinrake described Badenoch as “bold, optimistic, and strong,” highlighting her straightforward approach.

“She says what she thinks, which in politics is quite rare,” he noted. “Over time, people will grow to respect her. By 2029, we’ll be in a much better place to convince people to vote Conservative.”

Badenoch’s leadership style has been characterized by a focus on deliberate policymaking, signalling a shift towards rebuilding voter confidence ahead of the next general election.
