Jaguar Unveils New Electric Concept Car, the Type 00, Amid Leaks

Jaguar

Jaguar has officially revealed its much-anticipated electric concept car, the Type 00, at Miami Art Week. The unveiling followed a premature online leak that showcased the car’s bold design, sparking varied reactions.

Futuristic Design and Features

The Type 00 departs dramatically from traditional Jaguar designs, featuring vibrant Miami pink and London blue colour options. These colours highlight Jaguar’s attempt to blend modernity with its heritage, with Miami pink symbolizing the city’s vibrancy and London blue paying homage to the iconic E-Type’s opalescent silver blue.

The design includes:

  • No Rear Windscreen: Instead, rear-view cameras are installed under gold-accented patches.
  • Wraparound Glass Effect: A windscreen seamlessly blends into side windows, tapering towards the rear, creating a racing-helmet-like aesthetic.
  • Laser-Etched Brass Ingots: These house cameras that replace traditional wing mirrors, with visuals displayed on screens inside the cabin.

The car’s architecture uses a dedicated electric platform, delivering an impressive range of up to 478 miles. Rapid charging can provide 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes.

Jaguar’s New Identity

The unveiling comes as part of Jaguar’s ongoing rebranding efforts. The company has adopted a new logo, written as “JaGUar,” and has pivoted away from its diesel-centric past to embrace electric innovation. This rebranding has been met with mixed reactions, with some critics labeling the shift as overly modern or “woke.”

Production Plans

The Type 00’s production-ready version is slated for a late 2025 reveal, with an expected price tag exceeding £100,000. Jaguar will roll out three new electric models by 2026, signaling its ambition to become a leader in the electric vehicle (EV) market.

Strategic Shift

Jaguar’s parent company, India’s Tata Group, is investing £18 billion to accelerate its transition to EVs. This includes the production of electric Range Rovers, expected to begin deliveries in late 2024.

Adrian Mardell, Jaguar Land Rover’s CEO, emphasized the importance of the brand’s evolution, calling it “an original British luxury brand unmatched in its heritage, artistry, and emotional magnetism.”

While Jaguar has faced criticism for its slow adoption of electric technology, the Type 00 and the broader investment in EVs signal a bold step forward for the iconic British automaker.
