GTA VI Projected to Generate $3 Billion in First-Year Sales

Grand Theft Auto VI

The highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) is poised to set new industry benchmarks, with analysts forecasting extraordinary sales figures. Market research firm DFC Intelligence predicts that Rockstar Games’ next blockbuster title could generate over $3 billion in sales during its first year, driven by tens of millions of copies sold.

Historical Context and Market Conditions

GTA VI will launch into a gaming market resembling the conditions when its predecessor, GTA V, debuted in 2013. At that time, Sony and Microsoft’s console sales created a robust platform for Rockstar’s success. As of 2025, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S have sold approximately 66 million and 28 million units, respectively—comparable to the market size of the PS4, PS3, Xbox 360, and Xbox One era.

However, DFC founder David Cole suggests that GTA V‘s decade-long success will boost GTA VI‘s initial performance. “With 11 years of sales history, GTA V proved to be an enduring hit, with revenues growing in Years 7, 8, and 9,” Cole noted. He predicts GTA VI will surpass $1 billion in pre-orders before its official release, accumulating $2.2 billion within its first year.

Record-Breaking Legacy of GTA V

Grand Theft Auto V has demonstrated unparalleled longevity, selling over 200 million copies in 11 years. It consistently ranked among annual top-selling games for its first four years and saw a sales resurgence during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A significant contributor to GTA V’s enduring success was the introduction of GTA Online, a live-service component that initially required a copy of the base game. Despite a rocky launch, GTA Online became a massive revenue driver, sustaining player interest and contributing to the game’s legacy.

Next-Generation Potential

Rockstar’s strategy for GTA VI may mirror its approach with GTA V. Updated game versions are expected to launch alongside next-generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft, potentially boosting sales in the third or fourth year after release. By its fifth year, DFC forecasts GTA VI will have sold over 100 million copies—reflecting sustained demand and Rockstar’s market dominance.

Release Date and Rumors

Rockstar is targeting a fall 2025 launch for GTA VI on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. While rumors of delays surfaced in mid-2024, Rockstar developers reportedly dismissed these claims, indicating the project remains on track.

As anticipation builds, the gaming world watches closely to see if GTA VI will meet—and possibly exceed—the monumental expectations set by its predecessor.
