When Nigerian singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, released “Calm Down” as one of the songs on his debut album, “Raves and Roses,” it became an instant hit, but nobody could have predicted that American singer Selena Gomez would jump on a remix and make it a global hit song.

On November 9, 2024, the song made history by becoming the first Nigerian song to gain over 1 billion views on YouTube.

Apart from becoming the first Afrobeats song to hit 1 billion views on YouTube, the song also became the fastest song to reach a billion views on the global streaming platform, achieving the feat in just two years.

The original version of the song has also enjoyed commercial success and has garnered over 619 million views on YouTube.

Recall that in August 2023, the song made history by becoming the first song from Africa to achieve a billion streams on Spotify.

“Calm Down” is most likely on its way to 2 billion streams on Spotify, as it currently has over 1.5 billion streams on the global music platform.

Selena Gomez hailed Rema after the release of the remix last year, noting:

“This man has changed my life forever. Rema, thank you for choosing me to be a part of one of the biggest songs in the world. Love you forever.”
