Damilola’s Shoe Art Takes Global Stage

By Segun Adeyanju

Ayo-Odugbesan Damilola, the visionary founder and creative director of Blarkmate, has redefined footwear design by transforming a childhood passion into a globally acclaimed art form.

Despite early setbacks—including being barred from university admission due to age restrictions—Damilola pivoted to the fashion industry, channeling her love for design and cultural textiles into a thriving brand that now sells over 5,000 pairs of premium footwear worldwide.

Blarkmate’s unique appeal lies in its fusion of traditional African fabrics—such as Aso-oke, Adire, and Damask—with high-quality leather, creating shoes that are as timeless as they are innovative.

“Shoes have the power to transform an entire look,” Damilola explained, adding that “I wanted to celebrate craftsmanship on a global scale by merging heritage materials with modern design.”

Her six-year tenure in hospitality sharpened her customer-centric approach, teaching her patience, attention to detail, and the art of crafting unforgettable experiences.

These skills have proven invaluable as she collaborates with skilled shoemakers in Lagos, turning initial sketches and mood boards into meticulously tested, comfortable, and durable designs.

Sustainability is a core pillar of Blarkmate, with Damilola ensuring minimal waste and incorporating upcycled materials into production.

Looking ahead, she plans to expand the brand into a global lifestyle label, branching out into fashion accessories, gadget accessories, and home decor, all while championing eco-conscious practices and African craftsmanship.

Damilola’s journey—from overcoming early rejections to leading a cutting-edge, sustainable fashion brand—stands as a powerful testament to resilience, innovation, and the transformative potential of creative vision.
