ChatGPT Restores Service After Widespread Outages: What You Need to Know
OpenAI’s ChatGPT faced significant disruptions on Thursday, leaving many users unable to access the service. The San Francisco-based company confirmed its popular AI app was experiencing technical issues but announced a “full recovery” by 11:16 p.m. Eastern Time.
The company updated its status page late Thursday, stating it would conduct a detailed root-cause analysis of the outage and share findings once available.
What Happened?
The outage began around 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time, and users reported difficulties accessing ChatGPT. OpenAI attributed the issue to an upstream provider, which caused high error rates affecting ChatGPT, its API, and Sora, OpenAI’s video generation model.
While the API and Sora initially remained operational, OpenAI later disclosed it was investigating a separate issue concerning Sora but did not provide further details.
User Impact
Over 15,000 users reported problems on Downdetector, a platform that monitors website outages. However, the number of reports had dropped significantly by late Thursday night, with less than 50 incidents logged.
