Entrepreneur Leaves 9-to-5 Job, Builds $1.3M E-Commerce Business

Yong-Soo Chung, a former software engineer at Ripple, left his job in 2015 to start an e-commerce business, a decision that has since generated $1.3 million in sales in 2024.
Chung, who worked at Ripple when the company faced a $700,000 fine from regulators, said he felt trapped in his role.
He decided to quit and invest his savings in a business, launching Urban EDC, an online store specializing in everyday carry (EDC) gear like wallets, knives, and pens.
He built an audience through weekly product drops and Instagram marketing, allowing him to test products and adjust offerings based on demand.
Encouraged by early success, he and his wife launched a second venture, Spotted by Humphrey, a boutique selling pet accessories, after their French bulldog’s Instagram page gained 122,000 followers.
Urban EDC reached $3 million in sales in 2022, but declining revenue in 2023 forced Chung to cut costs, including reducing staff and outsourcing operations.
The adjustment restored profitability, leading to $1.3 million in sales in 2024.
Chung advises aspiring entrepreneurs to build businesses around their passions and remain adaptable. “You will never feel 100% ready, but taking the leap is necessary,” he said.
