‘I Became an Entrepreneur with My NYSC Allowance’ – Kelechi
By Segun Adeyanju
Johnpaul Kelechi, a 30-year-old mechanical engineering graduate of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, turned his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), allowance into the foundation of a thriving shoemaking business.
Kelechi, who completed his NYSC in 2018, said he saved from his monthly stipend of N19,800 to launch his brand, Kelz Wear.
His passion for craftsmanship and self-sufficiency drove him to take the leap into entrepreneurship.
“I have always loved crafts since childhood. Shoemaking is not just about making shoes but about creating something meaningful.
“I used my NYSC allowance to buy the materials I needed to start,” he said.
Despite financial constraints and the high cost of production, Kelechi has built a growing business, supplying customers within Nigeria and abroad, including Canada and the United Kingdom.
He has also trained over 20 individuals, encouraging more young people to embrace entrepreneurship.
Kelechi believes that Nigerian-made products can compete globally. “I make quality and durable footwear. My customers can testify to that,” he said.
Encouraging young people to explore entrepreneurship, he advised, “Start small, think big, and stay consistent. Hard work pays off.”
With Kelz Wear gaining recognition, Kelechi envisions his brand becoming a major player in the global footwear market.
