World Hepatitis Day (July 28): How can Africa best implement the 2024 Theme, “Know It. Confront It?”

World Hepatitis Day

Every year, the world meets to observe World Hepatitis Day, a special occasion dedicated to raising awareness about hepatitis worldwide. Hepatitis encompasses a group of illnesses that threaten the liver’s health. This annual event, initiated by the World Hepatitis Alliance in 2008, aims to educate individuals about testing procedures and preventive measures against all five types of hepatitis: A, B, C, D, and E. Originally slated for May 19, the date was shifted to July 28 in 2010 in honour of Dr. Baruch Samuel Blumberg, a renowned medical researcher whose pivotal discovery of hepatitis B garnered him prestigious accolades.

The Significance of July 28

World Hepatitis Day coincides with the birth anniversary of the esteemed Nobel Laureate, Dr. Baruch Samuel Blumberg, the visionary behind identifying the hepatitis B virus. Born on July 28, 1925, in Brooklyn, New York City, Dr. Blumberg’s illustrious career unfolded after serving in the U.S. Navy and earning a medical degree from Columbia University. Driven by a profound interest in parasitology, he embarked on research expeditions in Nigeria, where his groundbreaking work led to the identification of several new polymorphisms and, ultimately, the discovery of the hepatitis B virus. This seminal breakthrough revolutionised the landscape of hepatitis research and treatment.

Dr. Blumberg was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology in 1976 for his remarkable contribution to medical science. His pioneering efforts not only advanced our understanding of hepatitis but also paved the way for innovative treatment modalities. Over the years, World Hepatitis Day has evolved into a global phenomenon, marked by many activities such as free hepatitis testing screenings, poster campaigns, political demonstrations, concerts, talk shows, flash mobs, and vaccination drives. It serves as a poignant reminder of Dr. Blumberg’s enduring legacy and the ongoing battle against hepatitis worldwide.
