Super Eagles of Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen made history by becoming the biggest summer signing in the history of the Turkish Super Lig by joining Galatasaray on a season-long loan move from Italian club SSC Napoli.

Osimhen was subject of a transfer saga that saw him reject a move to English Premier League giants Chelsea and Napoli sabotaging his move to Saudi Pro League heavyweights Al Ahli, but that has all been laid to rest after he reached an agreement with Napoli to renew his contract and set his release clause at €75 million from the initial €130 million.

Galatasaray agreed to a clause that permits Osimhen to leave the club during the winter transfer window in January and made the Nigerian the highest paid player in the Turkish league by covering his €9/10 million annual salary.

Osimhen requested to wear jersey number 45, maybe to relate to the troubles of former Ghanaian-Italian star Mario Balotelli, who was subjected to various forms of disrespect and racist abuse in Italy despite being the first black player to make the Azurri squad.

“It was easy to accept Gala as it’s a big club,” Osimhen said after joining the Turkish champions.

“Onyekuru told me how special the fans are; I saw how they welcomed me at the airport… I was very happy.

“I was already following Galatasaray and their games since Dries Mertens joined them, so I can’t wait now.

“It’s a massive club, massive fanbase. I am ready.”
