Edward Enninful: British Vogue’s Ghanaian Born Editor-in-Chief

Fashion industry trail blazer, Edward Enninful is the editor-in-chief of British Vogue, with a special blend of vision, talent, and cultural resonance. Enninful’s Ghanaian heritage and his upbringing in London are closely connected to his creative nature. Because of this, his art has a unique perspective that values variety and inclusivity.

Throughout his career, Enninful has dismantled obstacles and challenged conventional wisdom in the field, winning praise for his avant-garde contributions to fashion writing and style. When he was 16, he was discovered by renowned stylist, Simon Foxton, who launched his meteoric rise to prominence in the fashion world. Enninful immediately became well-known for his bold and inventive styling techniques that went beyond convention and reinterpreted conventional notions of beauty.

He began a new chapter for the venerable magazine in 2017 when he became the first male editor-in-chief of British Vogue in the magazine’s 101-year history. Under his direction, British Vogue has changed dramatically, valuing diversity in all of its publications and supporting marginalised voices in both fashion and culture.

Drawing from his Ghanaian origin, Enninful has been greatly influenced in his editorial direction and is motivated to highlight a depth of African culture and tradition in the pages of British Vogue. He has challenged industry standards, pushed for better diversity and representation, and elevated the voices of Black creatives through his work.

His influence goes much beyond the magazine’s pages, even outside of his position at British Vogue. Using his position, he actively promotes diversity and inclusivity in the fashion business and works to bring about structural change. He is dedicated to promoting mentorship programmes for young talents and assisting up-and-coming designers in order to create a more inclusive and equitable future for the fashion industry.

He has received many awards and distinctions for his unique contributions to the fashion business; in appreciation of his efforts, one of which is the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for uplifting diversity in the industry.
