Inventionsby Blacks that Changed the World for Good

Throughout history, brilliant minds from diverse backgrounds have shaped the world through their groundbreaking inventions. This is equally true for inventors of African descent, whose innovative contributions have left an indelible mark on our daily lives.
Here are 10 inventions by Black innovators that have had a positive impact:

Portable X-ray Machine
Dr. George Alcorn, an African American physicist, contributed to the development of the portable X-ray machine, improving medical diagnostics. These portable devices are commonly used in emergency rooms, intensive care units, and other healthcare settings where rapid diagnostic information is critical. They play an important role in assessing injuries, monitoring disease progression, and guiding medical interventions.

Traffic Light System
Garrett Morgan, an African American inventor, is credited with the invention of the three-position traffic signal, which greatly improved road safety. The traffic light system, with its three-color design; red, yellow, and green continues to play an important role in regulating traffic on roads today. When you see a red light, it means you must stop. The yellow light indicates that the signal is about to change, serving as a warning to prepare to stop or proceed with caution. The green light signals that it’s safe to go. This simple but effective system helps control the flow of vehicles, preventing accidents.

Potato Chips
George Crum, an African American chef, is often credited with the accidental invention of potato chips, creating a beloved snack enjoyed worldwide. In the modern context, potato chips are widely available in various flavors and brands. They are a popular choice for a quick and tasty snack. People enjoy potato chips at parties, during movie nights, or simply as a treat on the go.

Home Security System
Marie Van Brittan Brown, an African American inventor, created the first home security system, which laid the foundation for modern security systems. Today, a typical home security system includes features like cameras, sensors, and alarms. Cameras can be placed inside and outside the house, allowing homeowners to see what’s happening in real time. Sensors on doors and windows alert the system if they are opened unexpectedly. If something unusual is detected, the system can sound an alarm and, in some cases, send alerts to the homeowner’s phone.
